Traditional Knowledge

Ice information and trends are intimately understood by Aboriginal communities. This knowledge is derived from a deeply rooted oral tradition. Traditional knowledge includes the compilation of information from generations of close interactions with the land. However, climate change is altering ice systems so rapidly in northern communities that traditional ways of interpreting ice conditions need to be re-examined.

Traditional knowledge can be collected through interviews with elders and community members. Use of Earth observation satellite data in these interviews helps preserve traditional knowledge and provides enhanced visual maps. These enhanced traditional knowledge maps are used by Aboriginal communities to aid in navigation and travel.
